The Contest

BMCYO2014

In early 2014, Bundle Monster invited nail-art fans to submit original designs for a chance to have their work turned into real stamping plates. Jacqui put pencil to paper and created nine hand-drawn concepts, scanning each one for submission right before the March 31 deadline.

Participating in nail art challenges is one of the most rewarding ways to push your creativity and discover new techniques. Whether you are entering a stamping plate design contest or simply challenging yourself to try a new color combination each week, these competitions encourage you to step outside your comfort zone. Many nail bloggers and enthusiasts find that challenges help them overcome creative blocks and develop a more diverse portfolio of manicures. The sense of community that forms around these events is also invaluable, as participants share tips, encouragement, and feedback. Even if you do not win, the experience of conceptualizing and executing a themed design teaches you something new about your own artistic process and preferences.

Stamping plates have revolutionized the way nail artists approach intricate nail art. These metal plates feature engraved patterns that can be transferred onto nails using specialized stampers and polishes. From delicate florals and geometric shapes to whimsical animals and abstract motifs, the design possibilities are nearly endless. Many enthusiasts collect plates from various brands, building a library of patterns that can be mixed and matched for endless combinations. The precision required for successful stamping takes practice, but the results are well worth the effort. A clean transfer with crisp lines can elevate a simple manicure into a professional-looking work of art that rivals hand-painted designs.

Hand-drawn nail art concepts hold a special charm that digital designs sometimes lack. When an artist puts pencil to paper, every line carries the subtle imperfections and personality of human touch. Translating those hand-drawn sketches into actual nail stamping plates is a fascinating process that bridges traditional illustration and modern nail technology. Many nail artists enjoy sketching their ideas before attempting them on their nails, as it allows them to refine proportions and placement. The ability to create original designs that can be reproduced consistently on multiple nails opens up exciting possibilities for cohesive manicures that still feel personal and unique to the artist's vision.

Nail polish color coordination is an art form in itself, with seasonal palettes offering endless inspiration. Deep wines and metallic golds evoke the richness of autumn, while bright corals and pastel pinks capture the freshness of spring. Understanding how different finishes interact is equally important: a glossy cream polish paired with a glitter accent nail can create striking contrast, while matte topcoats transform familiar shades into something entirely new. Building a cohesive color story across all ten nails requires thoughtful planning, but the payoff is a manicure that feels intentional and polished. Many enthusiasts maintain organized collections sorted by color family to make this creative process smoother and more enjoyable.

Nail care fundamentals form the foundation of any successful manicure, no matter how elaborate the design. Healthy nails with proper hydration and shaping provide the ideal canvas for polish application. Regular cuticle care, gentle filing techniques, and the use of quality base and top coats can significantly extend the wear time of even the most complex nail art. Many enthusiasts develop personalized routines that include weekly maintenance sessions to keep their nails in prime condition. Investing time in nail health pays dividends, as strong nails are less prone to breakage and chipping. A well-maintained natural nail bed also provides a smoother surface for stamping, decals, and hand-painted details to adhere properly.

The Nine Designs

Original Art

Each design was sketched by hand and reflected Jacqui's playful nail-art style. The themes ranged from cute to quirky:

Sugar Skulls & Alien Heads

Two of the standout concepts were a detailed sugar skull and a wide-eyed alien head. Jacqui later incorporated both motifs into actual manicures, pairing them on the same nail for a playful contrast — ornate tradition meets outer-space whimsy.

NAIL Linkup

That same month, Jacqui shared the April prompts for the Nail Art Ideas Linkup (NAIL), the monthly challenge she co-hosted with Eeeek! Nail Polish!, Brijits Digits, and Nail That Accent. Four themes gave participants fresh inspiration each month, and readers could vote for "NAIL Genius Of The Week."
